Damn like.

Sinsmas was so so bad that it literally made me want to rewatch all of Grace and Frankie from the beginning. I had basically forgotten about G&F but the HB finally was so bad that it like…catapulted Grace and Frankie back to the front of my consciousness.

Helluva Boss did such a bad job handling its themes and story that it just reminded me of a show that did a better job of exploring the same themes and made me want to go watch that instead.

Time ticked forward at a rate Jacob could barely keep up with. Days turned to weeks, and despite living together he barely saw Frankie. The town's white elephant party was a welcomed reunion, until it wasn't. He'd rectified the situation as best he could, Jacob thought. It wasn't easy to navigate his place in their community now that he sat on the council. His words had weight in a way he wasn't used to. An ability and a burden he was learning but struggling to wield. The specifics of such he kept close to chest.

While he, instead, chose to focus on the moment. It wasn't every day he was back at their parents place. Their dad asleep in the recliner, audibly snoring, while a game played. Jake half watched it while he attempted to put together a desk their dad bought. It only had about a million pieces and missing directions. "Did someone take the instructions out of the box?" He spoke aloud but to himself, as he still tried to figure out what step one could be.

I am re-reading Night Letter and am realizing I didn't do nearly enough research into scar tissue as I should have 💀 I spent hours researching lavender marriages and U.S. Army dog tags from the 1950s (as well as ranks and dismissals and such) instead of researching one of the defining characteristics of the main character, aka his severe facial scarring.

Anyway here I am retconning his scars - they are hypertrophic NOT keloid. That is entirely on me because I didn't know what the fuck the term was for it and assumed that if they were raised then they HAD to be keloids. I'm so sorry for this. Like deeply.

For those who don't know the difference, I don't recommend looking up pics unless you're okay with seeing mild medical g*re. Brief description of the aforementioned scar types:

Keloid: raised, shiny, firm & rubbery in texture with no distinct pattern. Caused by an excess of collagen deposits during the healing process. These scars invasively extend PAST the area of the original wound and do not regress over time. Hard to treat. Can form over months to years after an injury. More common in black folks and other melanated people who have a family history of keloid scarring.

Hypertrophic: raised, but not to the degree of keloids, and can also be different colors and usually have a distinct wavy pattern due to collagen deposits. Also caused by an excess of collagen, but not to the extent of keloids. These scars do NOT extend past the area of the original wound, typically do not recur, and CAN regress over time. Typically appear within a month of two of an injury and do not continue to progress (typically begin to regress actually).

I'm attaching an image below the cut comparing the two.

Left is keloid, right is hypertrophic. You'll see the difference. It's easy to confuse them because they're similar in depiction, but this is a good visual example of exactly HOW they are different. Raised scars =/= keloids!!! Do NOT be a fool like me!!!!

As Frankie cradles her nephew, eyes scanning over his little features while he sleeps, she's convinced it feels longer that he's been in their lives. Like Tobias was always supposed to be here, be Carina's. Even if the circumstances are less than ideal. The new routine of going to her sister's apartment feels habitual now, despite only beginning a few short weeks ago. "You should go to the party, Rina." Frankie says after a short time of silence, gently tapping her nephew's back as she nods to Carina. "It's good he asked, right? A good sign, I mean. That he will not disappear." because that's a worry she knows her sister has, even if Frankie doesn't think it would be much of a loss. "And I will be there." she'll make sure of it, having more interest in the Alvarez's than simply a merging of families. "Val, too."

No sooner had Devrim scrubbed out from his last scheduled surgery for the day was he paged for a consult in the emergency room. A place of chaos he loathed. His rotation in the unit during residency solidified any lingering doubts. Devrim much preferred a slower paced speciality. One without screaming patients and the urgency of traumas. They flustered him, and it was obvious after he left the bay for a reprieve at the nurse's station.

"I don't know how you do this every day.." When Devrim accepted his position at Bite Bright he worried he'd be bored. Consulting on and seeing patients at Lunar Cove's hospital was just a sliver of the career he'd imagined for himself, but on days like today he was grateful for the quiet, hum drum of the dental office.

When Frankie initially passed on the party Jake offered to throw out of obligation he didn't press her. After what happened at the party he hosted for Poppy and Linden, back in June, the witch had a lot of reservations about hosting another one. Maintaining his month and some odd days long sobriety felt daunting with a house filled with booze, too. The single bottle, still sealed, he'd bought for Frankie existed permanently in his peripheral vision.

"You didn't think pizza Joe's, a cake and something to drink were your only presents, did you?" He asked as he placed a gift bag in front of her. "You're hard to shop for, but I think I managed okay. You still love Barbie, right?" Jake joked but not about the shopping part. It'd taken him weeks worth of snooping and eavesdropping to come up with a gift idea.
